Proper collection and preservation of semen evidence are essential in forensic investigations.

1. Documentation

Evidence should be documented using:

  • Photography

  • Videography

  • Sketching

2. Collection of Liquid Semen

  • Collect using clean cotton gauze or cloth

  • Allow to air dry at room temperature

3. Collection of Dried or Wet Seminal Stains

  • Use sterile cotton swabs

  • Air dry completely before packaging

4. Collection of Stained Articles

Items containing semen stains may include:

  • Bed sheets

  • Garments

  • Napkins

  • Pillows

  • Used condoms

These should be collected as whole evidence whenever possible.

5. Sexual Assault Cases

Samples may include:

  • Vaginal swabs

  • Oral swabs

  • Anal swabs

  • Breast swabs

These must be collected by qualified medical professionals, properly dried, labeled, sealed, and preserved.
