Forensic Entomology

• It is the use of the knowledge of insect biology to legally investigate cases of questionable deaths of humans and animals.

• Terrestrial and aquatic insects have been studied with a view to understanding forensic entomology. Hence, forensic entomology is not restricted to land because it also examines insects in water.

Significance of Forensic Entomology

1. Estimation of Postmortem Interval (PMI)

Insects, especially blowflies, colonize a body in predictable stages. By studying their life cycles, experts can estimate how long a body has been decomposing.

2. Determining Location of Death

Insects are highly sensitive to the environment. Certain insects thrive only in specific habitats (urban vs rural, indoors vs outdoors). Their presence can suggest whether a body was moved after death.

3. Evidence of Neglect, Abuse, or Crime

a. Medico-legal Entomology

Used in homicide investigations to reconstruct timelines.

b. Urban Entomology

Insects can indicate neglect in living victims, such as maggot infestations in wounds of abused children or elderly individuals.

c. Stored-Product Entomology

Detects insect contamination in food or drugs, relevant in fraud or poisoning cases.

4. Toxicological Insights

• Insects feeding on decomposed tissue can retain traces of drugs, poisons, or toxins.

• This allows investigators to perform toxicological analysis even when human tissue is too degraded.

5. Geographical and Temporal Clues

• Insects can reveal the season of death based on species active during certain times of the year.

• They can also indicate geographical origin if species are endemic to a particular region.
